Left wing

Woodcock

Scolopax rusticola

GT

The head and beak are thicker than in a snipe, although side by side the beak may be a similar length. The rusty-orange and brown barred wings feathers are stiff and slightly curved. At first glance the wing feathers, particularly the secondaries, might be confused with a kestrel. Kestrel primaries have a dark outer web and, along with the secondaries, inner webs with bold white-orange patches. Woodcock tail feathers are short and wide, with orange and dark brown bars. They have distinctive tips that are matt grey on top and bright silvery-white beneath.
