Chapter Thirteen
In the corner of the room, a form was beginning to take shape. It started out as a dark shadow. Now there was color in some places it was still too hazy to determine if it was a humanoid form or not. Effie stood pushing Janis behind her.
“Get behind the bed and hide,” she hissed not taking her eyes off the form.
“Friends don’t hide.”
“They do if they want to stay friends. You’re the only one that can reach the created. If you’re hurt or dead, we’re both screwed.” Effie whispered not wanting the alien in the room to hear her.
Janis murmured something but got behind the bed going down on her knees to keep from being seen.
The form materialized its red eyes holding her hostage for a few seconds before the door to the room was kicked open.
“Hun, I’m home.” Raphael walked into the room with a smile, but his eyes promised death to whatever touched her.
Effie ran and jumped into his arms. She vaguely noted that Nicolas and several others were behind him. All she could see were those eyes holding her captive. It was the warmth of Raphael’s arms that penetrated the haze she was in.
“I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have taken off like that. I know you’re disappointed in—” He cut her off with a kiss. His tongue swept into her mouth. She never knew, didn’t understand that fear had a flavor. She could taste it on his tongue, then it was swallowed by relief. There was no anger or bitterness. She kissed him back trying to put everything she felt in the kiss. There was so much that she wasn’t ready to tell him or even speculate on. But this experience was an eye-opener something she wouldn’t forget anytime soon.
“I’m sorry.” She pressed her head against his chest.
“You have nothing to be sorry for. A good hunter knows how to give his prey a false sense of safety. I should have warned you. Whoever is hunting you stayed far enough away that we couldn’t pick him up. I was beginning to think you were safe. That’s why I didn’t stop the SUV at the gate.”
He knew she left? Of course, he did. Raphael had shown her from the first day that he took her safety seriously.
“Did you see who did this?”
“Not really, there was this shadow in the corner of the room. It was starting to take shape all I really saw were its red eyes. It held me mesmerized. Then you came in and it disappeared.”
“Red eyes.”
She shivered and nodded. “They were flat, dead red eyes, emotionless. When I looked into them, I saw my death playing over and over in slow motion. I knew that whatever that thing was, it was going to kill me.”
“Let’s get out of here, we can talk about it when we get you home.” Mick, Raphael’s brother, placed his hand on his shoulder squeezing it.
“Mick’s right. Let’s go home.” He placed his arm around Effie’s waist. “Destroy this place, I never want to see it again.
