My dearest Lizzy,

I know that you have been eager to hear what has been transpiring in Hertfordshire since your departure, and I dearly apologize for delaying this letter for as long as I have. In my defence, I have worried excessively as to how to explain the holiday we spent at Longbourn without distressing you. Please do not fret, as everyone is well, it is merely their attitudes, and what they have said in conversation that I am loath to impart to you.

Upon our arrival, we were greeted by not only your mother, but also your sisters, who all seemed very happy to see us; your father was conspicuously absent. Your mother, although she does not understand how you “caught” Mr. Darcy, cannot cease speaking of the excellent match you have made, and will gush to anyone who will listen of her good fortune. Jane is as you have described, and does not seem perturbed by much of anything that transpires. It is just as worrisome as your father's behaviour, which is completely the opposite.

Now, before I write more, I want to say that you are not responsible for this, and I do not ever want to hear you say otherwise! I would not have thought it possible, but your father has become even more of a recluse since you left. Your uncle ventured into his library the night we arrived, only to find him intoxicated and belligerent. He would not listen to anything your uncle had to say, and instead insisted vehemently that he leave him in peace.

Your mother insists that he is pouting because you managed to marry better than he had planned for you, but as your uncle was not allowed back into the study for the remainder of the holiday, and your father never left, it was unable to be discussed.

Mary, Kitty and Lydia are just the same as before you left, as nothing seems to effect them, or change their perceptions. Mary lectures, Lydia is unabashed, and Kitty follows Lydia's every move.

Mrs. Hill had tears in her eyes when I gave her the letter you requested I deliver. She was exceedingly concerned after the gossip of your marriage to Mr. Darcy, but when I told her of your happiness, she asked me to wish you joy. She is so proud of you for marrying above what your parents planned, and although she would love to see you again, she understands why you do not visit.

As for your uncle and I, we are well, and I promise to write more often now that I have managed to finally write this missive. The children are excited to travel to Pemberley with us in July, as it is all they talk about. Please tell your husband again how much we appreciate his gracious invitation, and I look forward to hearing of your first Christmas at Pemberley.

Yours affectionately,

Madeleine Gardiner

Elizabeth sighed. While a part of her knew things would change due to her departure from
