Annalise’s heart beat out Morse code as they walked through the hospital toward the elevator. Christopher had looked at her strangely—deeply. What was he searching for?
What did he find?
She forced herself to take normal, not-on-the-verge-of-hyperventilating steps, and she practiced steady breathing. The silent ride up didn’t help her nerves, and she’d never been so thankful to see a hospital play area.
Beth sat at a small table in the playroom as they approached. The boy from last Friday sat with her, minus his mom. Annalise smiled as she pushed through the door.
“Hi there!” Beth said. “You’re just in time to see what you’re in for. And you brought help!”
Annalise laughed and removed her coat. “I found him hanging around outside.”
Christopher followed her lead, hanging his coat on a rack near the door. He pulled a small, brown bag from his back pocket. “Actually, I wanted to give you this. It’s for the families who need it.”
Annalise watched in surprise. He’d brought something for the families? If she’d had any doubt about his sincerity—which would have been hard since he’d gone to such lengths to get help for the hospital—it was fading fast.
Beth took the package, and Annalise and Christopher joined her at the small table.
Annalise watched as Beth opened the bag, pulled out a stack of plastic, and then as Beth smiled. “Gas cards! These are very needed. The families will thank you.”
Christopher smiled and nodded sharply.
“Well,” Beth said. “Baker and I were just painting a picture. Would you care to join him while I put these away? His mom needed to get some fresh air, so I told her we’d take care of him for a few minutes.”
“Sure,” Annalise said. Her heart melted as she turned to the boy and smiled. “My name is Annalise.”
Baker sat at the table, his elbows on top as he painted. His hair looked like it’d been buzzed, but she knew from experience it was probably just growing back. His brown eyes were comfortable and friendly. “You came before.”
“That’s right. I hope I can come more often. Do you like painting?”
He nodded, then went back to his picture.
She watched him a minute, then grabbed her own brush and paper to join him. Something inside her cracked as she sat at the table. A desire sprouted that she’d never had before.
Kids. Maybe she wanted kids.
It was something she’d never considered—never allowed herself to consider. Growing up, she’d held onto Amanda’s death like a lifeline. How could she bring a child into the world, only to expose it to a million things that could take its life away?
But watching Baker paint awakened the desire in her to have her own child. To teach him, and love him, and to protect him as best she could.
I will watch over you.
The thought was not her own, and it gave her chill bumps. She shivered.
“Cold?” Christopher had grabbed his own art supplies, and his painting was actually pretty good.
“Just got a chill,” she said. She studied him as he painted, and as he smiled and interacted with Baker.
