Chapter Eighteen

One and a half years later.

Rader lay in bed beside Skye watching her sleep. Even though he didn’t need much sleep at all, he liked to hold her while she fell asleep. Now that their baby daughter Brook was born, it was advantageous that he didn’t require as much sleep.

At two months she still often woke up fussing two to three times a night to feed. Rader didn’t mind tending to her as it gave him something to do those long hours that Skye slept. He relished those times he spent alone with his and Skye’s daughter.

He picked her up out of her bed beside theirs and went to the small refrigerator unit for a plastic packet of Skye’s breast milk to feed her. He held the bottle in his hand and raised the temperature in his hand to warm the milk to body temperature.

Brook looked up at him sleepily, her beautiful face so sweet and trusting. Rader carried her to the large rocking chair that Skye had specially made and sat down to feed the baby.

Rader had always known how natural babies were born, he just never had a sense of how helplessly dependent they were until he and Skye made Brook. She was the most wonderful thing he’d ever done, and he had done it with Skye.

Back in his warrior days, Rader had never dared to dream life could be this good or that he could love anything or anyone this much. He’d spent the first half of his life killing, not knowing there was anything else for him to do or be.

But husband and father were surely the best. Skye now called him husband because after she became pregnant, she wanted to share the marriage vows of her people. It was all the same to him. He was hers, and she was his.

Rader stayed with his job as an enforcer. After the crash with the poachers’ spaceship, Glasica Law Enforcement petitioned the Alliance to put a space station in their system to warn them of unauthorized ships attempting to land. It wouldn’t prevent the landings but could at least warn them so they could evade disaster.

Skye’s and Jhenre’s virtual store was growing slowly as they displayed Jhenre’s art and Skye’s stories. Both were gaining popularity and making profits for the women without the projects taking over their lives. Skye was happy to have interesting work to do that left her time to enjoy her family and friends.

The Narovian Interstellar Matchmaking Service guaranteed a ninety-nine percent success rate. For Rader and Skye, they made one hundred percent.
