Rotimi Fani-Kayode

Made during the global AIDS epidemic and in the last year of his life, Rotimi Fani-Kayode’s Every Moment Counts brought Black gay men to the forefront at a time of increased homophobia and racism in Margaret Thatcher’s Britain, where the work was made. Part of the 1989 series of coloured prints ‘Ecstatic Antibodies’, the image introduces us to the ‘technique of ecstasy’ as two figures share a tender embrace adorned with references to Christian and Yoruba iconography. After fleeing a military coup in Nigeria, Fani-Kayode moved to Brighton, UK and later studied in the United States, before returning to the UK and becoming a member of the Brixton Artists Collective and cofounder of the Association of Black Photographers (now known as Autograph) in London. With his captivating and radical imagery, Fani-Kayode was able to make his mark on history before his death at only 34 years old.
