On a more technical level, we constructed the data set that underlies the current study by going through six of the smaller texts of the Old High German era. The texts were chosen to get a good distribution over the Old German era and language space. The regional and temporal characteristics of these six texts can be consulted in Table 1, which is based on information in the Paderborner Repertorium61 and the Verfasserlexikon (Ruh et al. 1978). Although some more texts are available, only these six had two or more observations for dative plural forms with a-stems. We avoided the larger texts, so that we can corroborate the claims of Braune (2004) on the basis of less-used evidence.62
