MALAKEI WATCHED from the board in awe. He shook his head and patted Greg’s back, trying his best to be encouraging. It was hard, knowing Seth said what Malakei himself had thought. He just didn’t have the heart to tell him, knowing how close they were. He would’ve definitely taken it the wrong way.

“Whatchu think, Kei? I mean, I like your boy’s suggestion, but you think I’m weak?”

“There’s always room for growth, Greg. You’re good. We all know that. I wasn’t perfect when I started. I took a while to freestyle without tripping all over myself. Remember that?”

Greg laughed. “Hell yeah. You sounded like a bumbling fool.”

“I seriously doubt that,” Seth yelled over since the music stopped.

Malakei eyed his lover. “Enough out of you. Stop eavesdropping and get ready to hear your master. We’ve got work to do.”

Seth winked at him and gave him a tongue wag.

Malakei groaned and fought with himself not to give everyone a show. He looked back at Greg. “All I’m saying is….”

“Who is this cat, man?”

“I told you. He’s from the band I’m helping, and he’s my boyfriend.”

“Really? Man, he’s wearing a skirt.”

“It’s a kilt, and it… looks fantastic on him. He speaks his mind a lot, Greg. And this time he’s on to something with that riff. It sounds great with those horns you set up. We need to bring them back in and see if we can blend them together. That’s if you like it enough to do it.”

“Oh, I like it, but I don’t appreciate your dude talking shit.”

Malakei patted his shoulder. “Forget it, okay. He’s just being himself. One thing I’ll never have to worry about is him holding back on saying what’s on his mind.”

“Yeah? Well, he might need to cool that if he wants to stay upright.”

Malakei frowned. “Hey, c’mon. Don’t threaten him.”

“I’m not, but somebody else might break that pretty face of his. I don’t really see it. He looks like just another white boy to me, but what do I know?”

Malakei grimaced. “Not your place to judge, and he’s more than just another man. He’s my man. You’ll always be my friend, but I won’t tolerate you bad-mouthing Seth.”

“Fam, I’m not, but that ain’t the way you come at your boyfriend’s homie, you know? Not in the first meeting.”

“Okay so his delivery was, uh… interesting, but he helped you, didn’t he?” Malakei patted his back.

Greg didn’t appear convinced. “Yeah. I like his idea, sure.”

“So forget about it, then. He’s gonna be around me a lot, Greg. Get used to it.”

“Dude, when the hell did you guys have enough time to get so close? Ain’t he only been here like three or four weeks?”

“Four and a half, but who’s counting?”

“Not me. Whatever. Not that I judge dudes, but… I don’t see anything so great about him.”

“Fuck you, Greg. The dude is hot. If Kei wasn’t on him and I was a few years younger, I’d be all over him.” Barry stood up and walked over to where the band was.
