Lale floated through the motions of getting ready for bed but forgot to brush her teeth. She only remembered after snuggling up under the covers, but she couldn’t find the energy to crawl out of bed when she had delicious fantasies about Miles to occupy her.

The man was a stellar kisser. Not that she had a lot of examples to compare him to. But enough to know not every guy could make her toes curl like he did. And judging by how hot and achy her whole body felt in the morning, her overnight dreams about the man were going to continue into the waking hours. He was so good he didn’t even need to be in the room to get her going.

And last night was the first time in a long time she’d slept without nightmares.

Reality dumped an ice bath over her head when she logged into her bank during breakfast, something she did regularly as a habit to be sure nefarious forces hadn’t drained the account overnight—something that happened more than once back home. The balance was dangerously low but not for any sinister reason. Because she’d had bills due. The deposit Aqueous Adventures had sent was nearly gone, and she desperately needed the final payment. Which wouldn’t be payable until she delivered one sunken boat.

What a happy coincidence that meant she would get to see Miles again. Whom she was apparently dating. Somehow. She still wasn’t sure how that had actually happened, but they’d gone to dinner twice and had definitely done some dating-type kissing.

Miles had taken her home last night and hadn’t even tried to cop a feel when he’d kissed her goodnight against her apartment door. She might not have hated it if he had. But he was painfully respectful of her personal space, which she appreciated. Mostly. Sometimes she cursed her lack of experience that seemed to keep him away just when she’d started wishing he’d get a little closer.

It wasn’t that she had a philosophical opposition to premarital sex or anything, though she’d certainly gotten her share of lectures on the subject growing up. It was more that no man had ever really presented much of a threat to her virginity. Usually her personality kept things from going too far, and on the occasions it hadn’t, the guy just hadn’t been that exciting.

Until Miles. That man threatened everything, especially her composure.

Sure she’d had a healthy interest in boys as a teenager, but her parents had done a great job of keeping her focused on school and then they’d started Lale down the path of entering pageants, which ate up ninety percent of her free time and meant she was constantly surrounded by people. Not a great atmosphere to meet anyone she could imagine getting intimate with, and besides, most of the people involved with the productions were her parents’ age.

Then the purges started. Military activity dominated the landscape of Istanbul until her parents died and Hakan packed her up to ship her off.
