Chapter 10
HEâD won. He almost couldnât believe it. Sure, he was used to getting his way with other people. Money and power opened many doors, but Zoe wasnât impressed by his money or his power.
This could only mean heâd succeeded in appealing to her emotions. Maybe she wanted to ease his worries. Or maybe she just liked the view and the short commute. It didnât matter. Heâd managed to negotiate a deal in which Zoe was accessible whenever he needed her. And she would be safe.
During their lunch, he remembered the things about her that had attracted him. Not just the physical elements, but deep down. Her love for their son was something he hadnât encountered, but it would have been a plus. He recalled her need for independence, and while he still wanted her to need him, he was also proud of her because she didnât.
He thought back to a few years ago when Gia was giving him a massage at her office in Philadelphia. She had told him he needed to see his potential mate as a partner. He needed to respect that she might want to work. And that she might want to bring something to the table.
At the time he thought it ludicrous, but now he could see how that might work. He would never think to ask Zoe to give up her job. For one, she was a valued employee. He relied on her talent and skill to help him steer his company around potential risks.
He blinked and looked up at his computer where he had been going over a report. Why was he thinking about marrying Zoe?
She was the mother of his son, and for that reason he wanted to make sure she was taken care of. But he wasnât only thinking of her moving somewhere safer. He had pictured her naked in the double shower. Heâd imagined her lying in her bed when theyâd stepped into the master bedroom.
âDax?â Harper said as she opened the door.
âYeah?â His voice sounded strange. As if sheâd just caught him doing something naughty.
âItâs almost six. Do you want me to go downstairs to get Mason?â
âNo. Itâs okay. Iâm done here for the night.â
She smiled. âGood for you.â
âWhat does that mean?â
âIt means youâre putting your child first. You used to stay in your office until you fell asleep on the sofa. Now you have a life.â
âI guess so. I hadnât thought about it.â
âAnd it means I get to go home at a normal time and have a life too.â
âIâm sorry.â
âItâs fine. I donât mind normally. And you always let me take off when I need to. I just hated seeing you work yourself into a slow death.â
âThere are more important things than work.â
âYes, there are.â She winked at him as she closed his door. There were more important things than work. Obviously, he had a company to run, but he also had skilled employees he could rely on to help run that company so he could spend more time with his son.
