That afternoon she answered a knock on the door to find Margaret standing on their porch. Quickly she tugged Margaret in and shut the door, hoping Brawley had pulled his man and no one saw her standing there. They didn’t need more trouble.

“Father wants to send me to Chicago.” Margaret’s deep, dark eyes were swimming in tears. This was too reminiscent of Rose’s visit a few months ago when she told Lillian that her parents were sending her to New York.

“Oh, Margaret. Maybe it’s for the best.”

Margaret stomped into the living, her face flushed in anger. “I’m an adult. He can’t just command me to do something I don’t want to.”

“He’s concerned for your safety.”

She threw her hands in the air. “Not you, too! I thought you’d be on my side in this.”

“I am on your side. But I want you to be safe as well. There’s a lot your father’s dealing with right now and to worry about you would be too much for him.”

“I don’t want to leave Cincinnati. Not when I’ve finally found something to be happy about.”

Lillian drew a shallow breath, choosing her words carefully. “If Michael’s feelings for you are true, then he’ll agree with your father and he’ll wait for you.”

She wanted to gag on her words, but what else was she to say? Michael’s even more dangerous than any enemy Brawley might have? She didn’t know that for certain. For all she knew Michael had abandoned his ill-conceived plans of making her his wife and moved on. But his smirk the other night and the hard look in his eyes told her otherwise. He was up to something, and she wouldn’t put it past him to use Margaret to get what he wanted.

“Did you come here alone?” she asked.

Margaret whisked her tears away with a jerky motion. “Yes.”

“It’s not safe for you to be out alone. Can you call someone to come get you?”

Margaret looked at her in disbelief. “I’m not calling anyone to come get me like I’m some disobedient child. Most women my age are married and have families of their own. Yet my father has such little faith in me that I’m not allowed to even see a man without his approval.”

“I don’t think it’s because he has little faith in you. I think he has little faith in men who are interested in you.”

“Michael is a gentleman. He’s kind and polite. It took him months to kiss me.”

Lillian wanted to hold her hands out to stop the flow of words. She didn’t want to hear about Michael kissing Margaret. She didn’t want to talk about Michael at all. Why couldn’t the man just stay out of her life?

“Has your father met him?”

Margaret hesitated, then shook her head. “I want to wait until the time is right.”

Lillian could pretty much guarantee that now wasn’t the right time.

She heard footsteps on the front porch just before the door opened. Joe stood on the threshold, looking from Margaret to Lillian in shock.

“Look who’s come to visit?” She silently implored Joe to understand she had nothing to do with this.
