When George got home, there was a message on his answering machine.

“Pastor Landris, this is Donald Gates. I’m Johnnie Mae’s brother. My mother said she called you earlier. I just wanted you to know if you haven’t already left, don’t worry about it. It’s about eleven here. We’re on our way down to the coroner’s in about thirty minutes. Just trying to get through all this. It was totally unexpected, and we’re all pretty much in a state of shock. My mother asked me to thank you, and to ask you to please continue to pray for the family.”

“What?” George said to the machine. “What happened?” He was so confused, and he still had no idea what had happened. He looked at the time; it was twelve-twenty, eleven-twenty in Alabama. Without thinking about it, he got in his car, and before he knew anything, he was on the road going I-20 West toward Birmingham. It was amazing how much quicker he was able to reach the University Hospital during that time of morning.

George walked in to what felt like a deserted building, searching waiting rooms and other areas. When he got directions to the coroner’s, no one was there. As he went back to leave out, Mrs. Gates was standing near the exit door gazing into space.

“Mrs. Gates?” he said, rushing quietly over to her. It took a few seconds for him to break through her seemingly self-induced trance.

“Pastor Landris,” she said, still crying. “I told Donald to call and tell you not to worry about coming. I suppose he must have missed catching you.”

He hugged her. “What happened, Mrs. Gates? Please . . . tell me. What happened?”

“Gone,” she said. “Just like that. Just gone.” She shook her head. “No warning. No good-bye. No nothing. Just gone. Johnnie Mae . . . Lord, my poor baby. I pray the Lord will give us all strength to make it through this. Please Heavenly Father, help us make it through.”
