WHAT DISCIPLINE IS NEEDED?

My experience is that it is easy for the staff on a project to design and document a process (see Young 2001, pp. 99–103), whether the process is for requirements, project planning, project tracking (monitoring and control), configuration management, peer reviews, defect prevention, or another critical area in the development process. This can be done in a conference room using a whiteboard or even a blank wall. By having the staff who are stakeholders in the process participate, a common understanding of your project’s approach (process) is achieved.

Moreover, and perhaps as important, if facilitated well, the process design session fosters teamwork. We are all well aware that when we work together as a team, we accomplish a lot more than when we don’t. Therefore, a level of discipline (process) is needed for each critical activity on the project.
