Opportunities are not easy to spot, and it will take some serious digging to unearth them. Control Data, Schwinn Bicycles, and RCA, to name just a few, sadly lacked a problem solving culture, which prevented them from seeing and solving the real problems that were destroying their companies. All these companies refused to change the way they did business to match the changing needs of their marketplace, and they are no more.

As a result of turning a blind eye to their problems, these companies allowed others to solve their problems for them—a theme repeated throughout this book. Each one of these once-successful and well-respected companies is now gone. Why? Because their leaders created an organizational structure that prevented them from facing the reality of what was happening.

When a company is faced with a complex problem, one of four things will happen:

The company will come up with the right solution that makes the problem go away.

The competition will solve the problem for them and they will not like their solution.

The marketplace will solve the problem for you and you will not like the solution.

The problem will be allowed to painfully destroy the company.
