Kono technique is similar to the R20 method, but it not only removes the pigment at the top but also physically removes the skin itself to deepen the optical penetration depth.

When can the Kono technique be used? It can be used to treat deep tissue. It can be used to remove congenital nevus, tattoos, or melanocytic nevus. I use a CO2 or Er:YAG laser instead of a long-pulsed laser to physically get rid of the top of the skin itself. For example, when removing nevus, I first use a CO2 or Er:YAG laser, and then use the Kono technique to process the remaining nevus using a 1064-nm Q-switched Nd:YAG laser. In the case of congenital nevus or tattoo removal, CO2 fractional laser or pinhole therapy with a CO2 laser is followed by the Kono technique using a 1064-nm Q-switched Nd:YAG laser.
