Generally, host Bret Baier and his guest pundits argued that Americans should be more concerned about the future productivity and growth of British Petroleum than the impacted Gulf community because a government imposed reparations fund not only threatened the companyâs future sustainability and profits, but also the stock ownersâ and shareholdersâ profits in the United States and abroad. Thus, Baier and his guest pundit Charles Krauthammer mutually supported limited governmentâthat strives for minimal government intervention in all aspects of societyâand entrepreneurial spirit.
Third, the news agent, individual in society, was rearticulated into individual responsibility, which focuses on the importance of autonomy and self-sufficiency in society rather than reliance on government intervention to solve problems and provide services. Supporters of individual responsibility argue that individuals have the right to govern themselves and should take responsibility for their own decisions. For example, all hosts and guest pundits on FNC favorably discussed local response efforts (which accounted for only about 2 percent of all claims) and often highlighted the importance of individual decision-making during response efforts while criticizing federal government involvement. On Greta Van Susterenâs primetime program On the Record, guest pundit and conservative politician Mike Huckabee noted how individuals located in the impacted region and local governments went against the federal government and took recovery and cleanup efforts into their own hands:
HUCKABEE: The governments of Okaloosa and Walton County are just sick and tired of waiting for permission to take care of themselves . . . and now are taking action to go ahead and do whatever it takes to preserve and protect their shores. . . . And I think thatâs exactly what the American people are waiting for. . .to finally just tell these pencil-necked bureaucrats at the federal level, Enough of your nonsense! . . . And itâs interesting, Greta, the people along the Gulf Coast are not sitting there, begging, oh, government, please save us. Theyâre basically saying, government, get the heck out of the way so we can take care of ourselves because youâre incompetent to do it! (Van Susteren 2010b).
