New Sources of Power
Today’s team leaders must look to new sources of power. The sources of their power are shifting: from position to persuasion, from charm to character, from control to service and sacrifice, from pride to humility, and from credentials to continuous learning and improvement. Their power must come from four character-based sources.
THE WISE EXERCISE OF SELF-AWARENESS, IMAGINATION, INDEPENDENT WILL, AND CONSCIENCE. Unless people exercise these four endowments responsibly, their team efforts will eventually fizzle. Team leaders must challenge any paradigm that ignores the responsible use of these freedoms.
SPENDING MORE TIME DOING THINGS THAT ARE IMPORTANT BUT NOT NECESSARILY URGENT. As noted earlier, when we surveyed Deming Award–winning companies, we found that their executives spend 60 percent of their time doing things that are important but not urgent (things such as creating vision, mission, direction, and recreation).
CONTINUOUS LEARNING, IMPROVING, AND PROGRESSING. Team leaders regularly assess results, receive feedback, and make necessary corrections and improvements.
HAVING A NETWORK OF WIN-WIN RELATIONSHIPS AND PARTNERSHIPS. Through personal humility and sacrifice, we naturally improve our relationships and establish strong partnerships. All our relationships take on the spirit of teaming, partnering, synergistic cooperation, and interdependency.
There is no sacrifice without humility. Either we are forced by circumstance to be humble, or we can choose to be humble in the realization that principles ultimately govern. To be humble is good, regardless of the reason. But it’s better to be humbled by conscience than by circumstance.
