The Role of Evidence-Based Practice

Meaningful research results must be disseminated locally in ways that are understandable and can influence application potential. Ideally, research needs to be conducted also to allow significant findings to be disseminated more generally through established scientific and professional means (Israel, Schultz, Parker, & Becker, 1998). This commitment to dissemination in either case is too often given short shrift.

In terms of local application, often results are not translated meaningfully into terms and action steps that community members find understandable or useful. In terms of scientific spread, often results are produced that cannot meet the rigors of presentation and publication outlets. This “local-general” issue can be perplexing and needs to be kept in focus during PD&E.

Careful consideration of relationships between research and application is needed to produce research and programs that are both locally and generally important. In the following discussion of evidence-based practice, notice the attention given to cultural relevance.

Evidence-based practice (EBP), a term that spans efficacy and clinical utility, is central to a local-general connection. It combines the concepts of research efficacy and clinical utility.

Research efficacy refers to the strength of evidence indicating causal relationships between interventions and disorders. This is a scientific emphasis, with consequences for generalization.
