Side Effects and Contraindications

The main side effect that may occur with houttuynia is nausea due to the herb’s fishy smell and taste. Do not take during pregnancy.

Finding Fresh Houttuynia

Houttuynia is best used fresh. You can grow it in your garden, but fair warning: it spreads quickly and is difficult to eradicate, and in some regions it’s considered an invasive species. You might consider growing it in pots. Or just look around your neighborhood — anyone who has a stand of it in their yard might be happy to let you dig some up. Avoid the variegated variety, which is less medicinally active.

Herbalist Bonnie Bloom, who makes the tinctures I use with patients, has a large garden of houttuynia plants. She is happy to sell plants inexpensively to people willing to pick them up at her farm site in Greenfield, Massachusetts. Find her company, Blue Crow Botanicals, in the Resources.

You can also order fresh houttuynia plants to be shipped to you from Strictly Medicinal Seeds (see Resources). Note that they have it listed under the common name “chameleon plant.”
