Spices for good health

The use of spices for culinary purposes is likely as old as humanity itself, with poppy, dill and coriander seeds having been found in sites occupied by prehistoric man more than twenty thousand years ago. This taste for spices is especially well illustrated by the recent discovery of traces of garlic mustard seeds (Alliaria petiolata) in pottery used for cooking food approximately six thousand years ago on the shores of the Baltic Sea. Since these seeds have very little nutritional value, but do have a peppery flavour similar to mustard, their presence attests to prehistoric cooks’ early interest in spicy dishes . . .
