For this viewer and others what is impressive about the 700 Club is that it is not just some good ole boy in a bri-nylon shirt healing the sick in a tent or belting out ‘heart-felt, Holy Ghost, heaven-sent, devil-chasing, sin-killing, true-blue, red-hot, blood-bought, God-given singing of the gospel’ (Swaggart, quoted in Barnhart 1988:128). It is a professional programme in which serious matters of foreign policy and domestic politics are discussed by people who appear to know what they are talking about.

We’re very proud of Christian programming. We use it ourselves, in our witnessing, we’re very proud that instead of just ‘Bible thumping’ as it used to be in the old days on TV – which was mostly embarassing, really not that great content, it was mostly the salvation message and nothing much more, or something negative, something out of touch with society – now we’re not ashamed because now there is excellent Christian programming that is very much contemporary, and in touch with society, and not afraid to discuss controversial issues. Hollywood and Madison Avenue will still try and make us look like a bunch of Elmer Gantrys and weirdoes in general, but basically speaking, people think it’s OK.

(Quoted in Hoover 1988: 182)
