Chemotherapy class is not really ‘class’ at all. It’s you and the nurse. Mano y mano. My teacher/nurse was very friendly, thorough, calm and gentle. Herself a cancer survivor, she assured me that she would never be far away during my clinic time. The room is kept cold to reduce the risk of germs and infection, she explained, quickly adding there would be a ready supply of warm blankets on hand.

I had the freedom to ask every question that popped into my head and I asked a few more than once just to make sure I understood. We talked about medications to take before, during and after a treatment, possible allergic reactions, foods to avoid, foods that would help, nausea, and fatigue. We also talked about my new body and its scars, prosthetic breasts, boring bras, and how only someone who has already been there can truly appreciate what you see when you look in the mirror.
