Chad

Statements from Chads about their relationships go something like this:

“I used to be alpha and slowly became beta.”

They used to be aloof and attractive but slowly allowed themselves to be whittled down to the sad states they eventually find themselves in. Chad is the man you knew in high school who got all the girls and was the captain of the team. He was the man in college who had a new girl every weekend and for whom life was a never ending party. He was the man you knew at work who had a perfect family and loving wife which he never seemed to have to work for it.

Chad is a natural, and he doesn’t care. Indifference is a superpower until it isn’t. Chad didn’t obsess about women because women obsessed about him. If Kate was giving him attitude or was sexually prudish, then Cindy was always available. Chad didn’t have to worry about anything because he had abundance. His indifference was attractive to women. They had to fight for his attention, and so they acted right for him. The ones who didn’t got the boot.

Chad has never had to be in control because women simply gave him what he wanted. When he wanted to settle down, get married, and start a family, why wouldn’t he become more docile and comforting for his wife? She gave him everything and he never had to do anything. He didn’t know why. It was the natural state of affairs.

Because people learn through failure and hardship, Chad doesn’t know what works on a fundamental level. He’s naturally protective over his family, but his family isn’t protective of him. While he is in charge, things are going great, but life is full of hardship and surprise. Things do not always stay great.

An economic crash, a car accident, a situation outside his control can occur. Indifference on his part may then come across as avoidance (and maybe it is). His wife goes from worshiping the ground he walks on to seeing everything he does as not being good enough. And since this is a new situation for Chad, he doesn’t have a plan. He only has instincts.

He becomes more aloof, more indifferent, more avoidant. He gets angry. He yells and sometimes gets violent. He sleeps with another woman for the validation he doesn’t get from his wife anymore, validation he once had in abundance. His wife, embarrassed by his behavior, leaves, cheats, or chooses the life of quiet desperation which creates relationship cold war until one of them calls it quits.

Chad used to be on top of the world, and his wife remained on her best behavior back when she was easily replaceable. It’s easy to replace a girl when you’re single. It’s much harder to replace a wife who has 2 kids that you love. A thousand concessions, each one minor, culminate in a husband being henpecked to death. The spirit of Chad is still there, but the body is weak, and the mind has atrophied.
