As an active leader you’ll lead your project team daily. You’ll review the project plan, foreseeing needed activities and initiating those activities, at the right time. Rather than taking on specific activities yourself, you’ll encourage team members to complete the required project work, thereby maintaining your ability to perform crucial activities associated with decision making, communications, risk management, and oversight of the project’s budget, while being available to assist team members whenever called upon.

This kind of project leadership competence is not learned in school. Rather it’s developed over time, through prior work experience, and is enhanced by formal awareness training and mentoring. When asked about famous leaders, leaders who stand out in their minds, many individuals cite former military officers, recognizing that the training and experience these individuals received during their military careers made them effective leaders.
