35. Identifying issues

Keeping a Frustration-Elation Log (FEL) is a simple way of capturing issues for discussion in coaching and mentoring. It’s also valuable for identifying recurrent patterns of behaviour or events. Once a week, the coachee/mentee writes down a few sentences on each of a number of things that have really pleased them about their work and career progress (and, if they want, about things outside of work and career); and the same about things that have really frustrated, disappointed or annoyed them.

In making these notes, consider questions such as:

• When did I feel really “in flow” and when did I feel stuck or lethargic?

• When was I pleased and displeased at other people’s reactions?

• What did I feel grateful for and what did I feel resentful about?
