When to use negative consequences

As much as possible use natural consequences as the motivation to change behaviour. The experience of wees running down their legs can be enough of a deterrent for some children to avoid it happening again.

In the past some parents would give their child a cool bath each time they wet their pants or wipe them using a cold flannel. The child soon got the message that they needed to use the toilet.

Negative consequences for children who can do wees and poos on the toilet but consistently choose not to could include:

• Putting them in a boring space to sit and wait while you clean up the mess

• If they are older, i.e. three and a half years+, you can give them rubber gloves, a scrubbing brush and a bucket of soapy water to clean their underwear before it is put in the washing machine.

• Find out what they value and take it away. If they love watching a certain TV programme or playing with certain toys, they are allowed to watch or play with this only when they have used the loo or potty or achieved the goal, i.e. getting three wees in the toilet.
