Chapter Ten

(Arlene)

I close my eyes, wishing all this had been a dream. However, my eyes are open and the man lying next to me is very real. How could I submit so easily to Vince? Earlier, I wrote off having anything substantial with him, resigning myself to knowing he would be with Benita once I return to the States. In my mind, I began the process of getting over him.

But when I look over at him, Vince is watching me with concern in his eyes.

“What are you thinking?” he asks.

We cleaned up ourselves and the living room just in case someone came home. Well, one of them had returned to let Vince in the hotel room. How else could he have gotten in? Anyhow, the task at hand is awkward for me. How do I communicate with the man I just had spontaneous sex with? I can’t even look at him because I’m so embarrassed and ashamed of what I’ve done.

Obviously, he has no problem just having sex with me. However, I feel he can tell I’m uncomfortable at the moment and probably wishes he could just leave. But he won’t leave me. Sticking around is his way of maybe showing he’s not the “hit it and quit it” type; I don’t know. I can’t read him or his actions.

The confusion has me spinning because I don’t know what his game plan is going forward. I guess I’m going to find out now that we’re being forced to talk to each other. One thing I need to reconcile in my mind is if I’ve slept with another woman’s man.

We are lying on my bed. I know April won’t be returning to the hotel anytime soon, and Mia and Josie will just go to bed once they see my shoes are in the front room. I left them there so they would know I was here.

“I have a lot going on in my head,” I reply. What does he want from me? A grade on how well he seduced me? If that is the case, then he passed with flying colors. He gave me the sexual release I’ve been waiting to have for years. But I can’t let him know that; I’ll sound pathetic.

“Such as?”

Damn, I hate this! “Um… this is hard for me. Despite what happened between us, I don’t sleep around. Especially with a man involved with another woman. You should have been upfront in the beginning about everything.”

“Benita is not what you think. She was with me a long time ago, but not now or in the future.”

I shake my head. “She was all over you. I understand the reason she was there, but she had a way of letting me know you are off-limits, not just to me, but to any woman. So, in her mind, she feels there is still something going on.”

We are facing each other on the bed—fully clothed, thank goodness. The partying has begun outside by the noise drifting through the windows. Vince has a hand propped under his head, and is staring at me as if to put me under a spell.
