The lack of sleep can also undermine your ability to maintain emotional stability. The impact of sleep deprivation on emotional dimensions is also of great importance to anyone in an organization, especially the leaders, and also those in the caring professions. One of the keys in both roles is the ability to support others. The first critical step to support others is to understand them. One common way to do this is to accurately interpret the emotions conveyed in their tone of voice or facial expressions. Research shows that even one single night of sleep deprivation affects our ability to recognize human facial emotional intensities.

The specific negative emotional effects of sleep deprivation can also interfere with our social interactions. When you are short of sleep, there is a significantly higher chance that your brain will misinterpret what’s happening and overreact, particularly to stressful or challenging situations.

Sleep deprivation, particularly due to sleep conditions that could disrupt the sleep of others, can also place social relationships under pressure. For instance, sleep apnoea causes the sufferer to wake up with a noisy gasp that is typically startling, enough to cause a bed partner to wake up. Snoring can also disturb the sleep of others. In the long term, the disruptive effects of such sleep conditions can lead to couples sleeping apart. A National Sleep Foundation survey, 2010 Sleep in America, found that 23% of couples slept apart due to snoring and other sleep-related issues. A similar number also reported that their intimate relationships had been affected because they were too sleepy to engage in sexual activity.
