twenty-four
I woke up at five a.m.
How could I have been such an idiot? How could I have blown things so completely? Why did I have to come up with such a stupid idea? I’d killed my chance of learning to surf. I’d killed my chance of getting my reputation back. Worst of all, I’dhurt Katie’s feelings. And I’d never meant to do anything likethat.
I sat on the floor fully dressed, my knapsack clutched to my chest, and willed the sun to hurry up and rise. As soon as it did, I’d call Mom to pick me up. I just wanted to go home. How I wanted to go home. I couldn’t face Katie and her parents.
The door whispered open.
Katie stood there, hair wild, a grim frown on her face. “Oh, you’re up?”
I nodded.
“Look, I’m sorry—,” we both said at once. I stopped in surprise.
Katie stepped into the room. “Really, I’m sorry. I don’t know what my problem was last night, but that was totally uncalled for. I completely overreacted.”
I leaped to my feet.
She raised both hands. “But wait! That doesn’t mean I want to read Cosmo with you. Just that I don’t see why we can’t be friends. So we’re different? So what.”
“Really?”
“Yeah. You can paint your nails or whatever when we’re hanging out, just don’t expect me to. I felt so mean about what I said. I felt like a total hypocrite, telling you what to do.”
I twisted my sleeve around my fingers. “Well, I’m sorry about what I said too.”
“Then let’s go surf. Want to?” Her eyes sparkled behind her thick glasses.
“Are you kidding? Uh, yeah!” I was so relieved. When it came right down to it, Katie was really cool. “Let’s go!”
We pounded downstairs.
The most heavenly scent filled the kitchen.
Katie’s mom was pulling muffins out of the oven. “Carrot-walnut, with cream-cheese-frosting centers,” she said. “Tell me what you think.”
Whoa. Okay, that sounded officially delicious. I took a huge bite. “Yum! Wow. These are crazy!”
“Well! I’ll take that as a good thing.” Katie’s mom, dressed in her catering apron, took a bow. “I only hope the food critics are as kind.”
We grabbed a couple more to go and devoured them whilewe headed for the garage. Outside, the world was growing brighter in the dawn light. Our hanging wetsuits were dry. We pulled them on. Hollering, we raced for the water and paddled out.
The sun sent its first warm rays shooting across the ocean. When we reached the wave’s peak, we found it still deserted.
“This is great. No competing for waves!” Katie said.
“I know, I still can’t believe only one surfer can go at a time. I’ll never catch waves when it’s supercrowded.”
“Sure you will. And come here, I’ll show you how to catch waves easier,” she said. “Sit deeper on the wave.”
“Deeper? What do you mean deeper?”
“Closer to the section where the wave first starts breaking.”
I gulped. “But that part’s so much steeper!”
“I know, that’s why it’s easier. You don’t have to paddle as hard. Come on, just try it.
