Emotions: Distract with opposite emotions

When you are feeling overwhelmed, angry, rejected, depressed, hopeless, or a host of other negative emotions that are stressful, it is helpful to engage in an activity that usually elicits the opposite emotion in you. This is helpful since it is difficult to experience emotional extremes at the same time. For example, if you are feeling hopeless, it will likely be helpful to watch a movie that inspires hope or hang out with a supportive friend who makes you feel hopeful. Likewise, if you are feeling sad you may choose to watch a funny movie, read a humorous book, or remember a happy time and replay it in your mind. Distracting with opposite emotions will help you escape the negative emotions you are experiencing and relieve stress.
