Chapter Sixteen

Poppy had expected a grim reception when she got back to the house but nobody even mentioned her absence. Life had already moved on.

‘Dad just rang!’ cried Jude excitedly. He’s taking the weekend off. He never takes a weekend off – it’s his busiest time – but there’s been a fire in the kitchen of his top restaurant where he’s superchef. So he’s decided we all need a holiday. We’re going to a posh hotel in Wales run by a friend of his. Apparently there’s a pool and all sorts of things to do.’

As Jude rambled on, Poppy couldn’t help picturing Angel as she’d left him, alone, head down. But after a bit she got caught up in the planning of this special treat. How lucky to have two nights – they were going that afternoon – and two days out of London and in luxury!

Even when Jude revealed she’d invited Amber too, Poppy remained cheerful. Amber would keep Jude off her back and allow her to enjoy things her own way. After packing her clothes and a swimsuit, she added a book and then her diary. In the past that diary had always been her best friend.
