Case Study #4: Ellen, Jamie, and Evie

Ellen, Jamie, and Evie had some video counseling sessions with me in 2020 when they were trying to decide about moving into senior housing. Ellen was an eighty-year-old journalist who had retired in 2014 after a long career at The Washington Post. She said,

I knew it was time to move out of my condo, because it was so hard even getting up the one flight of stairs in my two-story townhome. And I knew I should give up driving because my eyesight and my reflexes and reaction time are definitely not so great anymore. There was no way to continue living in my condo if I couldn’t drive, because it was outside of Washington, DC, and there’s not much public transit out there.

My husband died ten years ago, and we always had an open marriage. Jamie, my boyfriend of twelve years, is married. He and his wife Evie sold their suburban house five years ago and bought a townhouse in this same complex. They’re in their late seventies and they just didn’t have the energy to keep mowing the lawn and cleaning and maintaining that big house that they bought in 1975 when their kids were little. And they can’t drive any more either, Jamie has a seizure disorder, and they took away his license, and Evie quit driving after wrecking their car last year. All the senior living places I looked at seemed very traditional, and when I asked about overnight guests, they all said no. I explained that I had a boyfriend, and wanted him to stay over, they weren’t open to that at all. And I didn’t even tell them my boyfriend is married!
