Betsy swallowed hard, as he turned her to face away from him and began easing her frock down off her shoulders. His touch was soft, yet determined as she felt it going lower and lower, first off one shoulder, then the other.
The chemise was next. Betsy found herself holding her breath as she waited.
Those hands; those wonderful hands. She found herself wondering how many times heâd done this, and stiffened under his hands. The memory of the morning before they married planted itself in her mind. Heâd told her not to worry, he would teach her, and so far, he had been so good at doing just that.
Suddenly he turned her to face him. âAnd now,â he said firmly, âwhat exactly did Suzy mean when she spoke to you before she left?â
Betsy averted her gaze. âWhat⦠do you mean?â
He turned her face back to meet his. ââRemember what I said.â Those were her exact words.â
Betsy didnât answer. Instead, she attempted to turn away to avoid the intensity of his gaze. But Thad refused to let her, and turned her chin back to face him.
âElizabeth? What do I need to do to get you to answer me? I distinctly remember letting you know on the day of our marriage there were to be no secrets between us.â
Her eyes grew wide; she felt it.
âWe only discussed the materials for Evieâs house,â she said, âupstairs in the sewing room.â
He didnât believe her, she could tell. But he continued to stare down at her solemnly for several seconds before speaking. âIâll wait on you to come to me and tell me. But I will expect you to, sweetheart. Be mindful of that. If you donât tell me within a few days, Iâll force the issue. And you wonât like it.â
Betsy met his eyes with penitence, and sighed. How could she tell him what she had planned? There was an innocent little infant who needed sustenance not far away.
Thad reached over and lowered the wick on the lamp before he sat down on the side of the bed and lifted her up and over his lap. Raising her bottom high over his thigh, he slowly, softly, began to stroke her cheeks. Betsy gave a hiss as his hand stroked across her bottom. âAnd do you remember what I told you would happen if you lied to me?â
For an instant, she was tempted to tell him she would go to Chief Swift Eagle and tell him Thad had beat her. After all, heâd given sanction to a lady who had been beaten by Akecheta.
Then she remembered, however, the girl was the Chiefâs daughter, and groaned.
âYes,â Thad said softly, âyou do remember.â
Betsy closed her eyes. The sensuous feeling of his hand stroking across her bottom was decadent. âIâll tell you,â she whispered, âvery soon.â
