The Rebel Fire Ship

Yet another New York loyalist had chosen to risk travelling with the rebel army as a spy. As noted earlier, in May 1775 Joseph Anderson was listed in the Albany Committee’s minutes as a representative for Rensselaerwyck Manor.[21] Yet he and his elder brother Samuel had been secretly recruited by Sir John Johnson as officers for his loyalist battalion, and, because both men were Seven Years’ War veterans, Samuel was appointed a captain and Joseph a lieutenant. But there was another side to their story. As the brothers were well-established, highly regarded farmers and landowners in Pownal, the rebels offered Samuel command of a Continental regiment and Joseph a majority, which both declined, thereby raising suspicions.[22]

Joseph, in conjunction with two of Sir John’s chosen officers, James Gray and Thomas Gumersall, hatched a plot to burn the rebel shipping at Ticonderoga. When that scheme fell through he shifted to the second part of the plan and went to Quebec City to take the measure of the rebel army and determine Arnold’s intentions so he could pass intelligence to Governor Carleton.
