Dysphagia Lusoria

Abnormalities of the aortic arch , specifically the right aortic arch with an aberrant right subclavian artery, can press upon the trachea and esophagus causing partial or complete compression and collapse. Patients with this type of compression of the esophagus with symptoms of dysphagia are described as having dysphagia lusoria . On upper endoscopy, the pulsating aberrant right subclavian artery appears as an extrinsic compression on the esophagus along the posterior wall, with no abnormal mucosal findings. Prevalence of an aberrant right subclavian artery ranges from 0.5% to 1.8% of the general population. Other etiologies of extrinsic compression of the esophagus that may cause symptoms of dysphagia include mediastinal masses (e.g., germ cell tumor, lymphoma, and thyroid carcinoma), aortic arch aneurysm, and vertebral spurs. Diagnostic modalities used to visualize dysphagia lusoria include chest X-ray, CT scan, MRI, multidetector computed tomography angiography, and upper endoscopy [1]. The majority of causes of dysphagia lusoria are discovered incidentally on studies performed for other reasons.
