Felipe’s Letters and an Ode

Felipe Espinosa reportedly composed several letters and an ode during his time in hiding. According to the oral history of elder José Vicente Velásquez, Felipe arrived at the office of Indian agent Lafayette Head and delivered five handwritten letters addressed to Head, First Lieutenant William B. Moore of Fort Garland, Colonel John Milton Chivington, Governor John Evans, and the Conejos County judge. An unidentified correspondent wrote that Felipe had arrived in Conejos and acted like a zorro (fox), darting in and out, while visiting his two sisters,168 and firing off six shots from his revolver.169 But why would he waste his much-need bullets and risk capture? Another unidentified correspondent wrote that Felipe Espinosa “should be immediately hunted down and hung on the highest limb in the Sangre de Cristo ranges.”170

Lafayette Head’s letter from Felipe was written in Spanish as a bit of rhyme. According to José Vicente Velásquez, the elder Hispano who told his children stories about the Espinosas, it read:

Felipe le dice a Nerio,

Felipe tells Nerio,
