Chapter Eight
Connor looked at Leigh as Kal cleaned her up. She was beautiful even in sleep.
“She’s so sweet,” Kal said softly. “I’m going to go clean up and take off the harness, and then you and I can clean up the kitchen while she sleeps.”
Connor nodded. He’d already cleaned up and immediately began carting dishes to the kitchen. He sighed as he set them on the counter. He didn’t know if he could handle this for a week. Leigh was so responsive to Kal it hurt, and Kal—hell, she was so into Leigh, she was already winning her heart. He wiped a hand through his hair.
“Okay?” Kal entered the kitchen carrying a few dishes.
“Yeah.” He grabbed a beer from the fridge. “I don’t like you interfering,” he said. “Leigh knows how I feel about dinnertime.”
“I understand, but she worked, too, Connor,” she said gently. “She was probably on her feet more than either of us.”
“That is part of our routine. She handles dinner mostly, and she gets it out in a timely manner.”
“You’re an asshole,” she said softly. “Is that how your parents did things?”
“Yeah, it is,” he snapped.
“Did she work? Your mother?”
“No, but Leigh likes her job and we need that extra income,” Connor insisted.
“How badly?” she asked. “I’d never force her to work and then wait on me hand and foot. That’s not what love is about even when you’re a Dom.”
“Shut up,” he snarled as anger rose in him like a whale shooting up from the ocean. “You have no idea what you’re talking about.”
“I don’t, but I saw the look on her face, Connor,” she said, her tone accusatory. “She was literally afraid to react to a little fun unless you gave her permission.”
“That’s not how it is,” he insisted. It hadn’t always been that way. His job had gotten stressful, and paying for this house had only added to that. He needed things in perfect order in his home.
“I know you love her,” she said. “And I’m jealous as hell that you have her. Just this one evening has shown me what life could be like if she was mine.”
“She’s mine,” he gritted out as his hands fisted at his sides. “Mine, damn it.” Leigh was his heartbeat, his fucking soul. He would do anything for her if it would give her joy.
She nodded. “I know it, but you’re going to drive her away if you keep being so damned controlling, and when she comes to me, Connor, I’m not going to walk away.”
He shook his head and blew out a rough breath. His attraction to Kal was still there, but it was muted now that he’d had her. Still, if he wasn’t so afraid of how she could tear his world apart, he’d take her right now.
“Can I have the numbers of the accountants?” she asked.
“Yeah.”
