Chapter 4

Elizabeth had to sit very carefully on the dining chair that evening and her discomfort was exacerbated when she watched his amusement each time she shifted her position.

She was grateful that her husband kept the conversation light and unremarkable. She herself was distracted and unable to think about anything apart from what had happened today — and a breathless anticipation of what was to come that night in the privacy of their bedchamber.

She caught his eye as she reached for the fruit in the centre of the table. His gaze was dancing with amusement as he noticed the care with which she eased herself forward on her seat.

Soon afterwards he leaned forward. “If you have eaten your fill, Elizabeth, we might go through to the drawing room.”

She nodded. “Thank you, I have finished eating.”

He rose to his feet and came around the table. She took his arm and they walked through to the drawing room. With Georgiana in London and no guests to entertain, he would not remain behind to drink port alone, and she was quietly content with that.

“Let us take our coffee on the terrace.” His voice was calm. “While the weather is set so fair, it would be a pity not to take advantage of it.”

“Of course.” Elizabeth followed him demurely out onto the great stone terrace with the amazing views over the great Pemberley estate. Her heart swelled with emotion. She was the most fortunate woman in the world. A loving husband, the most handsome she had ever seen, a man with the wealth and possessions she had once thought beyond imagining. And he had chosen her, fallen in love with her.

“What are you thinking about, my love?” His head was bent close to hers as they stood at the stone balustrade.

“That I am the luckiest person in the whole world.” Elizabeth didn’t even have to think for an instant before answering him.

“Hmm.” He sounded thoughtful. “I wonder if you might wish to think again when you discover what I have planned for you later in our bedchamber.” His voice was full of amusement and she turned to him, her sense of calm suddenly yielding to arousal again.

“How soon might we make our way there, William?”

“Impatient girl!” His eyes teased her. “I have some more thinking to do — and a few items to collect.”

She bit her lip. “It sounds almost … alarming, sir.”

“Don’t be frightened, Elizabeth. I hope you still trust me.” He lifter her hand to his lips and kissed it.

“I do, William.”

“Good. I have taken note of what seemed to please you this afternoon and I will build on that.” He examined her face.

“But at any point I will stop if you say so. Your permission is of principal importance.”

“You are very good to me.” She smiled a little tremulously and wondered how she could please him.

He led her over to the chairs and small table that had been brought out. The coffee cups steamed in the evening air. Three candles flickered in the gathering dusk.
