We've worked, for example, with a consultant out of Chicago, Dr. John Seres, to develop tests for our candidates to become Nucor supervisors. The questions are heterogeneous and many seem irrelevant-e.g., "Do you like to go to baseball games?" "How many hours a night do you like to sleep?"-but a candidate's responses will tell us with fair reliability whether he or she is likely to succeed as a Nucor supervisor.

Reallocating Managers' Time. Managers typically spend far more time planning, instructing, and inspecting than they do listening, experimenting, and analyzing. Your company's managers will have to reverse that ratio to make their employees engines of progress.
