Questions and Exercises

In your organization, does support for plain language start at the top? If not, think about how you can influence the way top leaders view plain language. Identify the main concerns that your top leaders have about plain language, and create a plan of 300 to 500 words to address those concerns.

In your organization, does support for plain language come from many people or from only a few? Think about ways that you could promote plain language to others in your organization. Healthwise promotes plain language through internal newsletters, a plain-language glossary, training sessions, monthly meetings, and special events. What approaches might work for your organization? In a memo of 200 to 300 words, develop some ideas for promoting plain language in your organization.

How does your organization actively keep its audience in mind? Perhaps some aspects of the Healthwise approach might work for your organization. On the other hand, perhaps some aspects of your organization’s approach are especially effective already. First, identify the strategies your organization uses effectively and share them: blog about them, discuss them at a conference or an informal gathering, or share them in other ways. Second, identify some aspect you would like to improve, and then develop a plan of 300 to 500 words to improve it. Your plan should identify your improvement goal, the obstacles that currently impede your progress toward that goal, and the steps you will take to eliminate or work around the obstacles.
