Ralph Taylor was a good man. He didn’t consider himself an ideal Mormon, but he went to church regularly and fulfilled most of the assignments he was asked to do. But when the prophet had called on the saints to leave Babylon and come to Zion last July, he had found better things to do. After all, if he had abandoned his growing business in Pasadena, California, how would he support his family? Besides, if times were really going to get tough, a business selling food storage and survival gear should really become lucrative. Before long, he’d have enough money to buy his wife, Lynette, a new minivan, pay for those piano lessons, help his fellow man, and save for the future.
So when Lynette and the four children had pleaded with him to drop it all and move to the Rocky Mountains, he simply didn’t hear them. Lynette had done everything possible to convince him, but when he continued to refuse, she had packed up early one morning when he was still asleep, piled the kids into her old jalopy, and set out for Utah. She figured that was the only way to save her children and wake her husband up.
The trouble is, Ralph never did see the light. Even though he had lost the food storage to wandering thieves, he had managed to save most of the survival equipment. The things which were selling the best were the seventy-two-hour kits and the water purification devices. He had made a fortune, but to make sure the business was safe, he had found it necessary to sleep in his shop on South Raymond Street in Pasadena with a high-powered rifle close to hand. It was a lonely life. Several times he had succeeded in contacting his wife with the help of a ham radio friend, and had tried to convince her to return to Pasadena. She had always refused and tearfully begged him to join her.
Ralph awoke early on April 27. He figured it was just another day like any other. He ate a can of chicken noddle soup for breakfast and stepped outside his shop to get some early morning air. He was surprised to see so many people and such heavy traffic at that hour. As he turned to go back in, he felt a violent lurch which knocked him against the door jamb and then threw him to the concrete. He tried to rise, but the shaking was so vigorous that he could do nothing except sit on the concrete and hold on to the frame of the doorway. But terror filled him when the wood of the frame splintered suddenly and the entire building began to collapse, threatening to crush him.
Lying almost flat on his stomach, he crawled frantically toward the street. Pieces of concrete and sections of roofing pounded his body and disintegrated on the sidewalk around him like bombs falling from the sky. He felt excruciating pain as the debris tore a bloody gash on the right side of his head.
