The author of this paper is one of our national experts in working with personality disorder, especially in groups and residential settings. Like Scott Henderson, he assumes that there is meaning in the individual’s anti-social or unpopular behaviours and suggests that staff need help to understand this. If the staff can understand what is being re-enacted with them, and resist acting like punitive or seductive carers, then they can help service users with severe personality disorders ‘break out’ of their prison.
