Before pulling into the driveway of his grandfather’s mansion, Zachary had dropped Anton off at the nearest Starbucks. It wouldn’t be good for his grandfather or Hanley to see that he was still hanging out with Anton.
He parked in one of the spaces near the three-car garage. He had called twenty minutes ago to make sure this was a good time to stop by. Hanley had said it wasn’t but Zachary heard his grandfather yelling in the background, “Let the boy come. I’m fine.”
He was about to ring the doorbell when the door opened. “I saw you pull in from the front window. You can go up. He’s expecting you. But be brief, he has a breathing treatment due in ten minutes.”
“I don’t even need that much time,” Zachary said. “But I think I’ll need to see you after I see him.”
“Oh?”
Zachary hurried up the stairs and down the hall. He knocked gently on the door and was summoned to enter. “Hey Gramps, how are you doing?”
“Do you really want to know?”
No, I don’t. I can see for myself. You look terrible. Of course, he didn’t say that. “Yeah, it’s why I asked.”
“I’m dying, in the most boring and tedious way possible.”
You want me to pull the plug now? I can do that. Of course, he didn’t say that, either.
“Come closer. I’m too tired to yell.” Zachary obeyed. “I must say, I’m disappointed in you. I thought I would have seen you long before now, considering the things we discussed the last time you were here.”
“I would have come sooner, but you laid some pretty big things on me, Gramps. But believe me, I been working nonstop on ‘em ever since. For example, I had to find a new place to live. Then I had to move everything into that new place. Had to get rid of a lot of stuff, since the new place was so much smaller. Had to look for a job. Had to—”
“Have you found one?”
“Not yet.” Actually, he hadn’t even started looking.
“I notice you didn’t mention doing anything about the list we discussed. Specifically, item number one.”
“That’s because you interrupted me before I finished. I’m happy to say item number one is completed.”
“And what does that mean, exactly?”
“It means…that if anybody inquires about that painting on the internet—really from anywhere in the world—I get an email alert right away. It’s already happening. I’ve been getting hits about it ever since I set it up. Over two months now.”
“You’re getting hits about the lost treasure?”
“Well, yeah.”
“Then why haven’t you told me before now?” His eyes were bugging out.
“Because, they’ve all been false alarms. Nobody’s found it yet. The alerts mainly tell me when anyone discusses or inquires about the painting, or even about lost Nazi loot. So far, there hasn’t been a thing that even hints about the painting being found. And nothing from the state of Georgia. But the good news is, the idea is working. I’m telling you, anyone finds that treasure buried somewhere in Georgia, and they go on the internet about it for any reason, I’m gonna know.
