“Dad, no way! California for Thanksgiving?” Mandy practically tackled him when he picked her up for shopping.
“I talked to your Uncle Ben and he said to come on out.”
Mandy screamed again, grabbed his hands and swung him in circles. Her enthusiasm made him feel even guiltier for staying detached from Ben. He smiled as Mandy happy-danced around and dug in her backpack for her cell phone. She’d begged him to go to California the last two holidays, but he just couldn’t.
Mandy found her phone and punched a speed dial key. “I’m calling Sam,” she threw at him. She bounced on her toes, grabbed her jacket, and checked her hair in the hall mirror, all while keeping the cell phone glued to her ear. Addison was continually amazed at her bursts of energy, followed by the need for twelve or more hours of sleep every Saturday…unless there was a shopping trip planned. He held the door open as they headed for the car.
By the time they’d backed into the street, Mandy had clicked off the cell and her shoulders slumped. “She’s not home. And she still doesn’t have an answering machine.”
Addison had run into the same problem calling her about the case. “She doesn’t have a lot of money and I think she’s just being really frugal. It was a stretch for her just to get the phone installed. Hey, I’ve got an idea. Maybe we should buy Sam an early Christmas present?”
“Like an answering machine?” Mandy pursed her lips. “Earrings or a cute short jacket from Forever 21 would be better.” She turned to face him. “Can we get both?” The gleam in her eyes made him wary. Ever since Sam left, Mandy had been subtly suggesting he call her, write her, or go visit. Although this was a trip to stay with Ben, Sam was only a few miles away, and he knew Mandy would want them to get together several times. Was he ready for that?
“Dad, where are you going? You passed the mall.”
Addison took a right at the next corner. “I, uh, was just going in the back entrance.” He turned into the driveway and cruised down the rows of cars, pointedly ignoring his daughter’s smirk. “It’s not as busy back here.”
“Uh, huh.”
She always got the last word.
