But, why continue making scrapple—especially such a large batch—when it’s so readily available at local grocery markets and is such time-consuming work? “I’ve done it so long, it’s in my blood. Skeeter, my brother [Terry], was a big part of it too and a big help. I was ten years older than Skeeter, but he followed in my footsteps. When we got the opportunity to get all the equipment off of everybody, from various family members, it was mostly him and I that always did it together. He was a big part of this. Then, my son got older and we got him involved and then my grandsons. We have a lot of fun. You get to see relatives you don’t get to see outside of summer. That’s the important thing to me. It’s work—it’s not all that easy, but it’s a tradition and it’s our family’s thing.”
