In forced immersion, the buttocks may be pressed against the cooler bath base sparing the skin at that point and leading to a so-called ‘hole in the doughnut’ pattern. In the groin, buttock creases, back of a flexed knee, front of elbow, and where the hip flexes, skin creases may be spared from injury as hot liquid is unable to fully penetrate into these areas. If the lower trunk is forced into flexion during immersion with the child in a seated position, protected skin creases may be observed on the front of the lower abdomen (Table 4.3).Table 4.3Features of accidental and inflicted scalds
