5.3.2 Informed Consent

Informed consent from the parents/legal guardians is the most important step of preoperative counselling. The procedure, its benefits and possible complications should be explained and the attendants should be given time to clarify their doubts. Adolescent patients should be encouraged to participate. They should also sign an informed assent besides the consent given by their parents. The treating team should realize that few minutes spent preoperatively in counselling are more effective than several hours spent after the surgery. The discussion should be tailored to individual patients, the attitude should be sympathetic and the message unambiguous. Adequate time should be given and the decision should be respected.

Informed consent form used by us for pediatric cataract surgery is available as Annexure 1 at the end of this chapter. This has been adapted from the recommendations of the All India Ophthalmological Society [20]. The reader must remember that separate consents would be required for (1) general anaesthesia and (2) in patients of trauma.
