Hostility between Lewis’s rebels and their artistic rivals was not confined just to verbal and printed fisticuffs. As the violent quarrel with Hulme had proved, Lewis was quite prepared to translate artistic disagreements into actual physical show-downs.

When Marinetti made his last drum-rolling visit to London late in 1913, his disciple Nevinson, who had organized the visit, and Lewis were still allies in the front rank of modernism.

At a welcome dinner given at the Florence restaurant in Rupert Street – inevitably located in Soho, where most scenes of the Futurist/Vorticist revolution were played out – while Nevinson pounded the drums to provide the necessary percussion, the Italian declaimed a poem which Lewis later compared to an artillery bombardment on the Western Front. In the poem Marinetti attempted to reproduce phonetically the sounds of a modern battle by shrieking in a variety of pitches:

Zang – tumb – zang – tuuuuubb – tatatatata –

picpacpampacpampicpampicpacuuuuuuuu

ZANG-TUMB-TUMB-TUUUUM...
