Chapter 7: Natural Treatments for PCOS
Before there were modern medicines to treat PCOS, there were natural treatments. To this day, some prefer natural treatments over conventional medical treatments in remedying their illnesses.
Natural treatments can be very effective when treating PCOS. In earlier chapters, we talked of the benefits of a healthy diet and regular exercise as methods to naturally encourage ovulation and reduce the levels of androgen in the bloodstream. As many as 75 percent of PCOS patients can improve with diet and exercise alone.
There are some tips and helpful suggestions to reducing the symptoms of PCOS. These include:
Consuming healthy fats.
Fats are not the enemy when it comes to balancing hormones in PCOS. For example, the body is unable to make progesterone without the dietary consumption of cholesterol. While bodies do make a small amount of cholesterol without help, it isnât enough to keep hormone levels balanced. The good fats bodies require donât come from highly processed foods.
Butter is needed, which is best if eaten from pasture-fed cows and eaten raw. This kind of butter is high in fat soluble vitamins that are necessary in order to enhance fertility. Consuming organic butter, which has fewer toxins in it than regular butter, is also beneficial.
Believe it or not, lard or tallow that comes from pork or cows is good to eat when processed organically. Use it in cooking; it is loaded with nutrients that will improve hormone balance.
Eat food made from coconut oil. This is a fat containing medium chain fatty acids used to impart energy to the body. It is somewhat sweet and excellent for baked dishes. Avoid heating it up too much, because it smokes easily when used for frying or sautéing.
One of the best oils for cooking or salads is extra virgin olive oil. This is made from pressed olives and has known benefits for the heart. It works best when it is not cooked. Steer clear of vegetable oils like canola oil, corn oil, soybean oil and processed vegetable oils.
Stay away from animal products processed in factories.
Estrogen dominance is a big part of PCOS. Patients should stay away from meat products that have been injected with hormones. It would be better off to stick to only organic meats. Eating hormone-laden meat can also contribute to PMS, menopausal symptoms and infertility.
Buy grass fed meat that has not been injected with anything, and patients will be doing their hormones a favor. The next best decision is to use meat coming from animals raised on an organic-only grain diet.
Stay away from refined sugars and refined grains.
Sugars are bad for PCOS patients. They not only deplete the body of its nutrients, but they are the cause of insulin resistance. Hormone levels are stirred out of balance with this condition. It is important to cut out all sources of refined sugars and flours. Even natural sugar sources can affect the way insulin is released by the pancreas.
Women with PCOS should consider eating a primal diet in order to keep symptoms at a bare minimum.
