JOSH ELLIS, former theater publicist: I loved Earl. And I loved the fact that he made me feel like I was working in old New Yorkâwhere the press agent calls the gossip columnist at like eleven oâclock at night and things that happened in the theater get out there. It was my movie version of what it was like to be a press agent.
BARBARA CARROLL: A lot of people who came backstage [at the musical Annie] wanted to meet the dog. Earl Wilson made Sandy a star. [PR rep] David Powers got him an interview with Sandy. He was the first non-human Earl ever interviewed.
JIM MONES: I remember asking Earl Wilson once about a blind item. It was some actor walking around drunk or something. I was curious: whoâs the celebrity? He said, âThe answer is always in the column.â If he had a blind item, he said, their name popped up somewhere else in the column. I donât know if that was always true, or sometimes true. But thatâs what he told me.
Earlâs legmen, Martin Burden and Tim Boxer, had filled in for him over the years, but when Earl retired in 1983, Cindy Adams landed the job. She wasnât the only one who wanted it.
